Like I said, what is on many of our minds ... not all. That's what is great about my country (and yours) ... we can speak our minds and individual opinions.

Actually, I actually was in agreement with the spirit of the point I think he was trying to make. But his 'I went shopping before I gave money' line was the only thing he said that didn't smack of rash, poorly thought out hype.

"Bush hates black people" and "They sent in the national guard so they can shoot us" can hardly be categorized as the 'truth'.

Edited to add: And I'm not even a Bush fan.

Kanye sounded like a moron--the only part of his speech that didn't make him look like a reactionary idiot was the part where he admitted that he hadn't been doing what HE could for the crisis at hand.

What will become of that city after the water goes down? Will they just bulldoze it and start over?

Some, probably a lot of it, yes.

My husband is a home inspector who is a volunteer member of a group of other professionals who evaluate the post-disaster structural integrity of buildings to determine what can be saved and what has to be razed. He has done this work in many communities after major tornadic, earthquake, and hurricane activity. His FEMA contact called Tuesday night at 11PM telling him to be ready to move out as soon next week, and that they would likely need to make several trips over the next several months due to the severity of the damage and the timeline for recession of the water.

The only good news is that not all of New Orleans is below sea level, much of the french quarter is actually a few feet above SL, and they are hopeful that many structures can be saved. Much of the city that has been flooded likely won't have any structures that are salvagable. Other coast cities and towns that were destroyed by the hurricane might have a higher percentage of buildings that can be partly salvaged since the storm surge receeded relatively quickly.

The bottom line is, they just don't know yet.

i'm sitting here in awe, just having read that evacuation helicopters are reporting being shot at in louisiana.

shot at.. looters are seeing an opportunity to take goods that will probably be destroyed or paid for by insurance anyway.

it's dirty and nasty and wrong, but i can live with it.

Live news coverage of woman calling from inside the Superdome , explaining the conditions. A 10 yr old child was almost raped, two broken ankels, a 13 year old she said also raped. Bodies everywhere, violence rampant.
She said there are no police in sight there,,,,,,,,,no authority at all.

The authority figures that were in the Superdome keeping order, disseminating supplies and caring for the wounded were being attacked by the very people they were trying to help. Many of them were ordered to move out of and from around the Superdome because of the danger to them from the evacuees. You don't get to claim that no one's helping you when you greet those who would do so with a punch in the nose.

i work in a bookstore that specializes in buying its goods directly from the public second-hand and reselling them at half price.. .

it is a large chain of 83 stores in 8 states and does about 100 million a year.. .

When people confront me with my foibles and pecadillos I am grateful after I get over being seen as less than perfect :)

It generally sucks to hear it, but we almost always learn something relatively useful about ourselves, don't we?

I'm curious, though. When the situation in your original post was reversed in the past, and you were the 'religious fanatic' with all the smug answers, what could someone have said (or did they say) to you that would have impressed upon you displeasure with your condescension without your simply dismissing it on the grounds that they were misguided and firmly entrenched in Satan's world? Would anything they said to you during that conversation have made you see the error of your ways, or would it have likely ended in greater frustration to them, and more proof to you that you were on the right path?

While I don't believe it's wrong to take it, something in the old blood brochure sticks with me: They referenced someone who said blood is like an organ, you have to make sure you have a good match, more than blood type or RH factor. Does anyone have more info on this? Or am I just hanging on to old brain washings?

Just hanging on, I fear. Type and Rh factor match are the standards by which transfusable blood is matched with a patient in need.

Well, if this isn't my beef with the brand of Christianity you're peddling, I don't know what is. Devotion born out of fear isn't honest--it's motivation is not formed out of the desire to do what is just and good, but rather out of the desire to dodge a promised eternal peril if you are not devoted.

A poster on this board once posted the following sentence and it was a watershed moment for me: "Ask yourself this simple question: Can you truly, honestly, and without reservation promise to love and serve someone who threatens to kill you if you don't?"

My answer is no.

Don't you hate it when?

don't you hate it when people call you and don't leave a message.

i get up this morning and there's a missed call on my cell phone, a number that i don't recognize, but there's no voice mail.

i did the reverse look up and i have no idea who the hell this person is.

I think caller ID, like most technological advances, can be a ridiculously dangerous tool for people who clearly have too much time on their hands.

I work for a company that has all calls routed through the corporate switchboard. I cannot count the number of calls our receptionists field daily from people call back and ask "Did someone from here call me?" What, may I ask, is the point of such a call? If the caller had wanted to leave a message, they would have. Many of these people are incurring long distance charges to ask a question that can have no satisfying answer just because the unfamiliar number on the caller ID display was toomuch for their curious little brains to ignore.

I figure that if someone can't be bothered to leave a message, I'm not going to consider the call important enough for me to investigate. Put down the phone, get on with your life!
